Immediately after graduation, Fred began his career with the Alberta Forest Service as a field forester in the Peace River Forest. After serving in a series of progressively more responsible positions, Fred was appointed Director of Forestry in 1974. In 1979, Fred was appointed Deputy Minister of Renewable Resources in the Department of Energy and Natural Resources. Fred retired as Deputy Minister of the reorganized Forestry, Lands and Wildlife Department in 1989.
Following his retirement from government service, Fred accepted a position with Weyerhaeuser Canada as General Manager for the Oriented Strand Board business (3 Alberta OSB mills) and Alberta Vice President. Fred retired from Weyerhaeuser in 1995 to pursue his private interest, a small farm and some consulting work in affiliation with IMC Projects.
